A detail of a woodcarving in a gate at the Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Kyoto, Japan.
I think I could happily dedicate my life to traveling around Japan documenting the creatures and scenes and mythology that is so obviously represented by the carvings at various shrines and temples; as an illiterate foreigner with no real skills in the language doing such research is unfortunately rather daunting.
It does not prevent me from enjoying them, however.
